Our Staff

Meet the coaches and staff behind Southcoast Surge.

Dan O'Connell

Dan O'Connell

Coach

Coach Dan never planned to coach hockey. After wandering into a rink while looking for the snack bar, he somehow ended up running a practice and has been accidentally winning championships ever since.

Inspirational Quote

If you hear me yelling your name, skate faster.

Andy Clark

Andy Clark

Coach

Known for intense preparation, dry sarcasm, and deeply uncomfortable eye contact during video review. He began his career auditing curling stone warranties before moving into hockey strategy and advanced referee relations.

Inspirational Quote

Remember: the puck moves faster than your excuses.

Russ Tyler

Russ Tyler

Coach

Russ began as a volunteer statistician for a pond hockey league that technically did not exist, quietly tracking shots, passes, and "general puck irresponsibility" in handwritten notebooks. Coach Russ believes hockey is 60% effort, 30% teamwork, 15% hustle, and about 40% remembering which line you're on.

Inspirational Quote

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. You also miss a lot of the ones you do take, but shoot anyway.

Emily Tyler

Emily Tyler

Director of Mascot Operations

Emily is the famously soft-spoken handler of the Surge's mascot, Sergio. Known for her calm, quiet presence, Emily rarely says more than 700–800 words per shift and almost never provides constant running commentary from the bench. Her soothing inside voice has become legendary throughout the rink. She also serves as the team's Director of Snack Food.

Sergio

Sergio

Mascot

Forged from Viking berserker DNA in the molten depths of "The Crater of Death" in Reykjavík, Iceland, Sergio's villain arc began when his lifelong dream of operating a pancake food truck was destroyed by his lack of opposable thumbs. He turned to a life of bitterness, developing a fondness for crushing the hopes and dreams of children in Fortnite lobbies. He continued on this path of terror until the fateful day he met and befriended Emily Tyler at an MMA Steel Cage Death Match. Her calming influence allowed Sergio to focus on more productive activities — such as crushing the hopes and dreams of youth hockey opponents throughout Massachusetts.
